Owning a dog could lengthen your life, according to a new study.
We all know what joys dog ownership offers to both family and as a companion. There has been many studies have taken place in in particular relation to cardiovascular disease and researchers have come to a conclusion after examining data from 3.4 million Swedes aged between 40 and 80 over a 12 year period.
Researchers have found that dog owners have a lower risk of death due to cardiovascular disease or other causes. During the studies, a professor was met who had suffered a stroke six months preciously and he stated ‘it was my dog that saved me’.
While the study does not speculate on why the dogs might be better for life longevity, but suggestions are made that there could be direct effects of having a dog, such as more motivation for physical activity. There might also be very important effects of social support you get, from dogs and meeting people through your dog.
Scientists also speculate there could be a link with the microbiome. The dirt and germs that come naturally with a dog might boost its owner’s immune system.
